Blinded by Life

I titled this post "blinded by life" as opposed to "blinded for life" or "blinded to life", because they all have very different meanings.   My thought came about by way of a pizza girl, actually, for lack of a better term to call her....one who sells pizza...a pizza clerk?   I don't know....it's irrelevant except that she was selling pizza at a local establishment and I have spoken to her there on numerous occasions over the years, so we have struck up a sort of "acquaintance-ship".
Our first conversation ran about dieting. Or the lack thereof. I mentioned to her that the reason I hadn't been in the store for awhile is that I was bouncing around a diet of some sorts.  I had lost something in the neighborhood of 50 lbs by last summer, and in a year I have managed to gain back roughly 30 of those lost pounds. I mean, who does that? (Unless you're pregnant of course.)  So we were talking about how difficult it is for me to lose weight, or to stick with a diet for very long (long being more than 4-5 months in my case).  This young gal is extremely thin and she opened up to me that she tried all she knew to gain weight without success. She said the doctor even had her to start drinking Ensure, which is typically a dietary supplement for elderly folks.  She said they told her to eat fat, basically, to try to gain some weight, and she said it's just not working. I commented on how strange that was, that here I can walk by food, and the calories surge thru my veins just on the very inhalation of it, and she desperately wants to gain weight and is unable. I also commented that people tend to look upon obesity as a pathetic lack of self control, and that most people assume that if you are "fat", it is most definitely your own glutenous fault.  However, I said, I bet no one ever looks at her and says her skinniness, or her inability to gain weight, is HER fault.  Why is that??
She said it hurts her feelings when people make comments about how skinny she is, and I thought, geesh, if only I had that problem! (not really, I just get tired of hearing fat jokes from John Q. Public all the time).   So I'm thinking something is broke in society when we are trained that being overweight is hideous and ugly and something to be ridiculed, but skinniness is acceptable because it's - well - skinny, regardless of the cause.    Just "food" for thought.   (get it?  ...)

The other point to ponder, which leads me to my blog title today....we (the same pizza liaison) and I were talking about Destin, Fla, which I was fortunate to be in last week, and we were just talking about how beautiful the beaches there are, and how bright and sunny it was, yada yada yada....She was telling me about how pretty Outer Banks, NC was and about the lighthouses, etc etc etc...I told her that I had asked a clerk while down in Florida if she ever got used to the beauty of the white sand and aqua waters, and she said that sadly, yes, you do get used to it. My little pizza gal popped up and said it's because you get "blinded by life".  And I thought to myself that was quite a statement. She followed it up with saying that it was pretty here too though, which I had to agree with because I love the fall colors. But it made me really stop and think about being blinded by life.  How many other beautiful marvelous things of God's beauty do I miss because I'm blinded by life?  Blinded by the hurrying and scurrying of working my day job, then running errands, taking care of Mom's needs in the assisted living facility, running Bub back and forth to wherever he goes....I no longer have time to enjoy things I used to, because I'm so busy running that I have no time to stop and enjoy life, and the beauty of life around me.  On the way home I took extra special notice to see how beautiful the leaves are. How blue the sky is. The wonderful temperature.  I have sadly been blinded by life right here at home, and it took me going to a pizza place to refresh my thoughts on the beauty around me.
So here's my posing question to anyone who would stumble onto this post.....are you being "blinded by life" to something you really need to see?

Caio!
