Not much foodage thoughts going on here today. Didn't cook anything really. Little man had an overnight guest last night, and so they wanted Krispy Kreme this morning. Not my fave donut, but not the worst, and really it was their treat so we went, and that was breakfast.
Later I headed to a baby shower for a couple that I've known forever. The guy I've known since he was a little boy, he is like a baby brother to me (my 'brother from another mother', I always tell him), and the gal is a sweetie I met several years ago. Very dear people to me. So lunch was eaten there, a soup and salad kind of deal; not traditional shower fare, but very rustic and thematic.
Supper tonight was warmed up leftover pizza from not one, but two different pizza joints from earlier in the week. Which I'm really proud of actually, because normally I hate leftover pizza and will generally throw it away, but in my effort to be more thrifty on food and groceries, I am relearning some things, and leftover pizza ain't so bad. 'Specially when you throw some extra mozeralla on it before it hits the oven!
My big food spiel of the day has to be Aldi's. I have become an Aldi's freak. I now do probably 80-90% of my grocery shopping there. Today I did my biweekly plunge - laying in food for hopefully the next two weeks until payday; got a cart full of groceries, and walked out minus $77 and some change. You can't beat it. I said to the clerk as I was checking out, that I knew I would have spent an extra $40 or so for the exact same stuff had I went to Kroger's or Meijer's, and she said yes, that's right, and that's why people shopped there at Aldi's so much. So what if I have to bag my own groceries. And pay a quarter to get my cart. The food quality is good, and you save anywhere from $0.20, to $2 or $3, per item, sometimes more, depending on what you get. I got a spiral sliced brown sugar ham from there today for less than $11. The same ham would have cost me $18-$20 at Krojay. And they are awesome! That's the only ham we buy now, and it's seasonal, so whenever they have 'em, I buy 'em!
I've been a little vocal about my Aldi's experience (earning my way up to poster child I guess) but it's interesting to see the different opinions I get. Some are eager, on the bandwagon, etc. Others, not so much. The thing is, I get those people. That was me 3 months ago. I remember vividly the day when one of my friends from church was telling me how much they liked Aldi's cheese, and I wrinkled up my nose, very snobbishly I'm sad to say, and said "I don't like their cheese." (I had never even eaten Aldi's cheese at that point.) Now - I absolutely LOVE their cheese. I will buy their cheese before I'll buy Kraft or Sargento's, I like it that much. So it's funny to me to run into those same bias's, realizing that was me just a few months ago. Just goes to show ya that truly there is wisdom in "don't knock it, til ya try it."
Until next time, ciao!
